Find Your Toyota SA On Pickacar.co.za
For many South Africans, Toyota is a brand that is synonymous with quality and reliability, having gained it’s reputation in the 1980’s with the early models corolla’s – some of which are amazingly still on the road. For Toyota, SA and many other countries globally has been something of a success story as previous to the reliable Japanese manufacturers, we were dependant on the heavy American manufacturers and then also the French cars – most of which were mediocre and suffered quality control problems whilst the little Toyota’s just kept on getting better and better.
Now, I’ll be honest and admit that they are not very exciting cars, ok I’ll be even more honest and agree with myself that some models are borderline boring. If you have never driven a Toyota before, it takes about 10 seconds to familiarise yourself with where everything is – and then that’s it!! You’ve discovered everything – which is awesome in a way – but so completely boring. Obviously, this kind of familiarity is not to distract from the value that Toyota South Africa has brought to the market – without a doubt there is every reason to agree that they are the most popular make of car in SA today – so much so that any sensible farmer would buy a Toyota Hilux, or a taxi driver a Quantum – it’s a no brainer – they go and go and go, and the aftermarket care is excellent. Often prices for the luxury SUV, Toyota Prado and Toyota Fortuner are incredibly high, disappointingly so. A used SUV with over 200 000 km’s still fetches well over the R200 000 on the used market - and these are 5 year old models! Now this is an exceptional car, it’s ready to go anywhere, in luxury and it’s uncomplicated, and you can put your dogs in it, and your mother-in-law, or the whole lot in the back!
Of course this is not the only model that comes to mind, the entire fleet is actually really rather good, let’s look at the Toyota Tazz, (replaced by the little Toyota Yaris), thankfully now out of production, but like that little 80’s corolla, I think we’ll see it for a long time to come(I see two looking out my window right now). The popular Toyota Avanza, which replaced the versatile Condor (which offered a 4x4 version as a budget Prado), makes for a useful midsized MPV.
Toyota SA also made a very wise move a few years back and developed the awesome Toyota Quantum – and I do mean awesome. No longer are Taxi passengers forced to sit like canned sardines in the back row, clever Toyota SA identified this as a problem and produced a legal 14seater – for adults! It has head room so you can move easily to the back and lots of comfortable seating with armrests.
The current corolla is not my favourite – something’s just wrong with those tail lights, so much so that I’m not able to comment on the rest of the car. I just can’t seem to get past them to get inside, or at least past the way the back looks – way too Japaneesey for me. The Toyota RAV4 got it right though, good styling and thankfully they made it a little bit bigger than the original – slightly more manly, heavier set.
If you were buying a used car for your business fleet, your own personal transportation or your daughter’s first car – you are probably putting your money on a sound bet if you buy a used Toyota – history tells us so.
