Subaru Impreza Review: Impressive WRX

Overview

Fast, rápido, snel, schnell, rask, vinnig. It doesn’t really matter in which language you choose to say it, fast is fast. And that’s exactly what you get with the Subaru Impreza WRX. It’s not possible to go slowly in the WRX, from the minute you fire up the engine and put your foot down, you’ll be smiling all the way.

Performance

Packed with Subaru’s notorious Boxer engine, the WRX has a 2.5-litre 4 cylinder engine mounted as low down as possible for a better centre of gravity and better handling.

Producing 195kW, the WRX can get you from 0-100 in 6 seconds dead. But there is even more fun to be had thanks to the Symmetrical all wheel drive system the WRX offers.

Road holding is exceptional, allowing you to make full use of the road regardless of what the road might offer.

Economy

Claimed economy for the WRX is 10.4 L/100km, but we did manage to get it to below 10 L/100km on flat roads taking it easy. That’s not a likely situation in the WRX though, so one can reasonably expect the economy to sit round the 11 / 12 L/100km mark.

It’s still a small price to pay for the pleasure this car will give you.

Tech

On the inside you’ll find some basic tech. There is no protruding LCD that lifts from the dash, but there is a basic display showing you your fuel consumption.

It comes with a radio, AUX jack and USB port for iPods.

Comfort

With such a strong heritage in the rally world, the WRX was never going to give you a soft luxurious ride. Subaru don’t employ much in the way of fancy tricks when it comes to suspension.

Some manufacturers might offer air suspensions and the option to adjust the ride firmness, but the WRX gives you one setting, and that’s the right setting. It’s a firm ride, with excellent road feedback and handling.

Practicality

The WRX is a basic sedan shape, although there is nothing sedanish about it. The boot space is a respectable 368 litres. Leg room in the back is sufficient for an Adult.

As an every day car to use the WRX works really well. It has a pretty light construction weighing less than 1500kg’s.

Conclusion

The WRX is a cult car. It’s stooped in a long history of rallying, and it’s essentially just a road going version of the rally car. The setup, handling, steering and firm ride are reminiscent of what it would be like on the rally circuit.

But despite all that, the WRX works very well as an every day car to use in your commute. It’s a great looking car, with a lovely exhaust note to boot, and when you do find the occasional open stretch of road or winding mountain pass, you couldn’t possibly wish to be in a better car.

All in all the WRX is a well rounded car for any motoring enthusiast. See a great selection of used Subaru Impreza for sale here.
